Repair vs Replacement: Is Window Repair Worth It?
7 min read
When a window mists up or a door lock fails, it's tempting to assume the whole thing needs replacing. Often it doesn't. This guide explains how to tell the difference, so you only spend money on what's actually broken.
Most faults are one component, not the whole window
Windows and doors are made of parts that wear at different rates. Glass units, hinges, handles, locks and seals all have a working life — the frame usually outlasts every one of them.
Replacing a failed component is almost always a fraction of the price of a complete new window or door, and there's no disruption to plaster, sills or decor.
When repair is the right choice
- Misted or cracked glass in an otherwise sound frame
- Stiff, broken or loose handles
- Snapped locks, failed gearboxes or worn cylinders
- Dropped doors and sagging or draughty windows
- Worn or perished rubber seals
When replacement makes more sense
We'll always be straight with you. Replacement is usually better value if the frame is rotten, split or badly warped, if several major parts are failing at once, or if the windows are very old single-glazed or early double glazing and you want a big jump in energy efficiency.
What affects the price of a repair
Every job is quoted individually. The main things that change the price are:
- Size and type of glass (toughened, obscure, leaded or Georgian bar units cost more)
- Whether parts are standard or need sourcing for an older or unusual system
- Access — ground floor versus upstairs or awkward positions
- How many items are done in the same visit
Questions to ask any repairer
- Is the frame sound, or are you recommending replacement for a reason?
- Is the price fixed before work starts?
- Do you carry common parts so it can be done in one visit?
- What guarantee comes with the parts and workmanship?

Common questions
- Is it cheaper to repair or replace a double glazed window?
- Repair is usually much cheaper when the frame is sound — you only pay for the part that has failed.
- Do you give free quotes?
- Yes. Send us a photo or book a visit and we'll give a clear, no-obligation price before any work starts.
- Will a repair affect my existing window guarantee?
- If your windows are still under a manufacturer guarantee, check with the installer first — they may cover the fault.
